• Strategic interaction between market players affects the performance of grain markets and the risk of food crises. Strategic dilemmas can arise if traders don’t trust government announcements on future maize purchases or if the government does not trust stock estimates provided by the private sector. • Government “pre-commitment” (announcing in advance how and when it will operate in the market and then behaving in a consistent manner) is found to produce superior welfare outcomes to “discretionary intervention” whereby the government operates in an unpredictable and ad hoc manner in markets. Situations of food shortage and over-supply were much more frequent under a discretionary policy environment because of the risk of poor coordination between the... |

Objective of this study was to evaluate the interaction effect of conservation tillage and irrigation methods on the soil properties, crop yield and water productivity in wheat-maize cropping system. A split plot experimental design with three replications was used to conduct this study in Fars province, Iran. Surface irrigation, drip tape irrigation, and sprinkler irrigation were considered as main plots, and no-tillage, reduced tillage, and conventional tillage were considered as sub plots. Results showed that surface irrigation had the maximum wheat yield on average and the maximum maize yield was obtained from drip tape irrigation on average; while, tillage methods had no significant effect on crops yield. Results also indicated that the maximum water... |

The objective of this study was to estimate the efficiency of arable crop farming in Ijebu Division of Ogun State with Ijebu North East and Odogbolu Local Governments selected as the study area. To achieve this objective, primary data were collected with the use of well structured questionnaires from 120 respondents. Of these, 90 were usable for the analyses. Frontier production function was used in analysing the data. The results show that 56 male and 34 female respondents were interviewed, out of which 73 per cent had formal education and 53 per cent had less than 10 years of farming experience. The computed technical efficiency index shows that maize had the highest number of variables with high technical efficiency index. Based on the fact that the... |

Responding to demand from expanding poultry feed markets, maize area in Bangladesh rose from only a few thousand hectares in the 1980s to more than 200,000 hectares in 2007-08. This publication describes the rise of maize in Bangladesh, emerging problems or risks, technology options for rice-maize systems, and future research and development needs. It also outlines the role of CIMMYT, through its Bangladesh office, in the establishment and promotion of maize, as well as the provision of germplasm and capacity building for researchers and farmers, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), and diverse non-governmental organizations. |

The effect of thresher machines on maize , Cadiz cultivar was studied based on some technical indicators. Two types of machines (Maize thresher local M.T.L and Maize thresher MGI.Ty60) were tested at three velocity cylinder threshing of 200,250 and 300rpm and three ranges of grain moistures of 15%, 17% and 19%. The experiments were carried out in a factorial experiment under complete randomized design with three replications. The results showed that the Maize thresher local M.T.L machine was significantly better than the Maize thresher MGI.Ty60 machine in all studied conditions. The results showed a production process of 1.196 and 1.147 t\h, power consumption of 11.361 and 12.234 kW, cracked grain percentage of 4.024% and 4.374%, broken maize... |
